Basic Obedience ClassTazley, a Shetland Sheepdog, practicing in the obedience ring

This one hour class is held once a week outdoors at J.L. Legacy in an regulation sized training ring. It is designed for adult dogs (one year of age or older) who are at any skill level. This obedience class is both an introduction to learning the basics and the first stepping stone to competition events such as agility, companion dog and rally. We build on the basics of AKC's Canine Good Citizen program and we add education on appropriate collars, leashes, how to use praise, toys and treats to motivate your dog and we teach you to train your dog to ignore common distractions while displaying desired behavior.

At the conclusion of the 6 week session, you and your dog will have the knowledge and the tools to practice and eventually master the following skills:

  • "Sit"
  • "Stay"
  • "Down"
  • Down/Stay for 3 minutes
  • Wait
  • Come when called
  • Walk in heel position
  • Stand for exam
  • "Off"
  • "Leave it"

If your dog has not already received their Canine Good Citizen title from the AKC, you and your dog will have the opportunity to take the test at the next testing event at J.L. Legacy from a certified CGC Evaluator. These testing events are held periodically throughout the year and there is no additional cost for the test, as it is included in the cost of the class.

At J.L. Legacy, we believe that if you expect the best from your dog, your dog will rise to the occasion. Through consistency, effort both in and out of class and a positive attitude you and your dog will get the most of out of this class and strengthen your bond with your dog.
